Yuriy Stepanov, Finance Director, BMS Law Firm, in his conversation with RBC noted that the person reporting to the police may lie about the amount stolen by significantly overstating it. “It’s like with a common theft. For instance, an apartment is burgled, something is stolen, and you may report anything you like”, he clarifies. According toStepanov, to report money being stolen from
a safe deposit box, it must contain sings of break-in. “The court may award damages to a claimant, but damages need to be proven, he added. Stepanov also noted that a bank is not responsible for the contents of a safe deposit box. “It [the bank] only rents out a safe deposit box and gives access to it. When a person enters the depository, he/she produces his/her passport, and there is also
a register of attendees where it is clearly specified who entered it and what safe deposit box was used. You are given a key and a bank employee is given a duplicate”, told Stepanov. Access to a safe deposit box may be granted only to the person mentioned in a relevant contract, and this requires producing a passport, he added.
